Mission

The Carel du Toit Centre follows a natural language acquisition approach through the maximum use of the auditory modality and the application of auditory verbal principles. We believe that the hearing impaired child has the same capacity to acquire functional spoken language as hearing children. The hearing impaired child must be exposed to day-long listening through the use of appropriate hearing aids or a cochlear implant. A normal hearing environment is created – the same as for hearing children – where the hearing impaired child learns language through natural experiences and interaction. The intensive language learning environment leads the child to linguistic competence. This must extend into the school years and become a way of life.

Vision

To teach deaf children to speak so that they can function optimally in a hearing world.
